"Add Network Place" results in an exception error

I have two computers on my home network and recently encountered a problem when trying to access shared folders from one computer.

First bit of weirdness - the network shortcuts I had used before had incorrect paths:

Clicking on the link to a shared folder on my second computer led me to an empty folder located in Documents and Settings (!?)

    e.g. : C:\Documents and Settings\Main Computer\NetHood\Folder Name

    instead of

    \\Second Computer\Folder Name

So I simply deleted the shortcuts and tried to create new ones. That's when I encountered the exception error.

The two computers are still successfully networked. I can still access files on the Second Computer from the Main Computer by clicking

    View Network Computers>Second Computer>Folder Name...

So the network itself is alive and well but when I try to create the shortcuts I get the following error:

an exception error occurred when trying to run "netplwiz.dll, AddNetPlaceRundll"

then the computer locks up. Can anyone please help?
