I've inherited an old g5-166 with WIN98se and the previous owner has removed some games & programs but they still show up in Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs.

Normally I'd re-install the application and then uninstall it but I don't own or have access to these apps!

So how can I remove all the junk that is left behind throughout the PC from these partially removed applications?

Thanks (y)

If you know for a fact that programs and their leftover folders in C:\PROGRAM FILES have been uninstalled and deleted, you can get rid of their "ghost entries" in the Add/Remove Programs list by going into the registry. The fix is pretty simple, but follow the directions carefully.

Click Start - Run, type in REGEDIT and then click OK. This will open the registry editor.

Click the + in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion - Uninstall.

Start from the top and click directly on each folder in the Uninstall sub-menu. As you do, look at the DisplayName entry in the right pane.

Once you find a folder with a DisplayName to a program that no longer exists, right-click the folder, then click Delete - Yes.

Close the registry, then reboot. The "ghost entries" should no longer appear in the Add/Remove Programs list. (y)

Go here and download and install EasyCleaner 2.0.6.380. Once it's installed, run its "Registry" function. Once the scan is finished, select and delete all the entries that it finds.

Once that's done, run its "Unnecessary" function. Place a checkmark in the top 3 boxes first, then run a scan. Once it's finished, select and delete everything that it finds. Close the program, then reboot.

(Note: This utility is great for finding and getting rid of junk files and invalid registry entries. Don't use any other function except for the 2 mentioned)

Get back with me and let me know how it went.

Old programs that were uninstalled will likely have left old registry entries and useless files behind, which is why I suggested that you use EasyCleaner to find and get rid of them.

Excellent, thanks! :D And cleaning up removed nearly 200MB of junk (y)
I'm always wary of editing the registry but I'm trying to learn more.

Appreciate the help. (y)
