I have an existing network of multiple computers all running xp and a laserjet printer installed on a main one and the others are networked to it and have run fine. i just got a
new laptop with Vista and it will recognize the other computers and will go all the way through the add printer wizard recognizes them on network and when connected says access denied. I know there is some setting that i am missing.
    any ideas?

Without more information on the computers it is difficult to know for sure.

For starters, do you have the same user account and password on the computer that is sharing the printer that is being used on the Vista computer?

i went ahead and double checked and use the same user account and password.
i have taken the vista laptop and joined workgroup, I can see the other computers on the network map but the one with the printer is shown down at the bottom instead of at the top with the router and other computers.
the routers firewall is open and the only other one is windows unless this hp laptop has its own stuff that the manufacturer included.
i have an hp laptop running vista, 2 dell laptops running xp and 1 desktop running xp that the printer is hooked in to.
it goes all the way through but denies access

I have helped friends set up wired and wireless networks before and mixed vista and xp and it still allowed the printer to be shared with no access violations. i know there is software for this printer that has a vista version and i went to HP's site and downloaded that and tried it and got to the point where it asks about hard wire or network printer and it does the same thing. ACCESS DENIED

got it figured out, they had named their new laptop the same name as a user on main one and it caused a conflict. As soon as I changed the name of the laptop everything loaded and is working like a champion.
Thanks for the good ideas, it got me thinking and i started from the beginning in network 101 and saw the same names and knew that was a problem. :)
