I have a ssd in my old laptop that is only been used for a week or two, so needless to say its still new. My motherboard then died, and now I'm looking to get a new laptop. My question is can I just swap in the ssd into a new laptop instead of paying more to get a new one in the laptop, and would I have to format it and reinstall windows.

if the two laptops are identical, you should be fine. If they are not, you will need to format it and install windows.
