    hi guys,

why is it that on my computer, when i download or open a link to a .PDF file, i have the options to either OPEN, SAVE, or CANCEL right from there. there is no need to save it to a location before i can open it...i can just open it. but on my girlfriend's computer, it only gives me the options to SAVE, or CANCEL...no open option... i must save it and then open it. it's really annoying.

it is the same version of adobe acrobat reader and i even uninstalled her version and reinstalled it again hoping that it would fix the problem. is there a patch for Internet Explorer that is causing the issue (we are both using IE 6). anyone have any ideas?

Open up IE. Go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab, and click Manage add-ons. (I have IE7 - I don't think it has changed that much since IE6.)
Switch the view from add-ons that have been used to add-ons currently loaded in IE.
There should be some listings called Adobe PDF... - make sure they are all enabled. (To do that, just highlight the listing and there should be an "Enable" button down lower to click)

tried that already to no avail... :-(

i have been on the phone with adobe, and all over the net and can't find a solution.

adobe told me to open reader, then go to edit>preferences>internet> and the UNcheck the option that says "display PDF in browser" and also UNcheck the option that says "save as optimize for fast web view" under the documents menu... that DIDN'T do the trick either.

    this is driving me crazy

i was also given the Knowledge Base number 405461 from adobe, and they said that this would definitely fix the problem...AND IT DIDN'T :-(

    see kb405461
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb405461

and just to let everyone know, i have already completely uninstalled adobe reader and reinstalled it several times thinking that fresh install would cure the problem, and it hasn't made a bit of difference. the version of reader doesn't matter either, as i've tried versions 7, 8 and 9... all with the same exact issue...which makes me think that it might be an issue with MS IE6.

It might be a security issue - opening it from download would suggest a lower security level.
Check under Tools, Internet Options, Security.
    Check under Misc., Launching Applications.

No, there is no misc tab, it is a section under Security...just scroll down until you see misc as a header.
    Sorry for the confusion.

Go to Control Panel> Folder Options> File Types> PDF> Advanced. Try checking the "Confirm open after download" box.
