Is the "Advanced PC Tweaker" offered by "Speed it up Free" a good program or should I avoid it? It seems that every time I start Speed it up Free, it offers that download to me. I downloaded a system registry once and it messed up a couple of my programs.

    Thanks, Barb

    Barb:

Don't waste your time or money on registry cleaners, boosters, optimizers, etc.. They don't do what they claim to do, and some of them will cause major problems.

If you've already downloaded and installed a demo/trial version, get rid of it.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Having plenty of RAM, keeping the startup load to a minimum, keeping the buildup of temp/junk files cleaned out, keeping spyware and malware at bay, not using multiple memory-hungry/processor-hungry programs at the same time, and keeping the visual effects/"eye candy" to a minimum will keep your computer running at optimum performance.

There's no "miracle cure" program for doing that.

OK, that's what I wanted to know, always do as they say on this site, especially you Flavallee. If I post a Hijack This log here, will you look at it and tell me what I should get rid of? Barb

I'll be glad to help you with a HijackThis log, especially if it shows a bloated startup load and unneeded programs.

I hope that the version I have isn't out dated, but here it is. Thanks

I'm going to have you edit and trim down the startup load. I'm including links to some of them so you can see what they are and what they do and why they don't need to automatically load and run.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup"(tab).

    Remove the checkmark in:

    DiskeeperSystray C:\Program Files\Diskeeper Corporation\Diskeeper\DkIcon.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=DkIcon.exe

    BJCFD C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=CFD.exe

    Adobe Reader Speed Launcher C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe

    SpeedItUpEX C:\Program Files\Speeditup Free\SpeedItUp.exe

    Image Transfer C:\Program Files\Sony Corporation\Image Transfer\SonyTray.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=SonyTray.exe

You decide if you need this one to automatically load and run.

    HP Digital Imaging Monitor C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=hpqtra08.exe

I have no idea what this one is, but it's my guess that it doesn't need to automatically load and run.

    Everything C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe

After you're finished editing the startup list, click Apply - OK - Exit Without Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the window so you can see the list more clearly.

    Highlight and double-click on:

    Ati HotKey Poller

    Diskeeper

    Google Updater Service

    LiveUpdate

    Pml Driver HPZ12

Change the setting from Automatic(if currently set there) to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

You have to do one entry at a time. If the Pml Driver HPZ12 entry resists getting changed, leave it alone.

After you're finished editing the Services list, close the window, then restart your computer.

When the small SCU window(see screenshot) appears on the desktop, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in that window, then click OK.

Run a new HijackThis scan, then post that new log here.

You didn't uncheck and disable these startup entries:

    Adobe Reader Speed Launcher C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe

    DiskeeperSystray C:\Program Files\Diskeeper Corporation\Diskeeper\DkIcon.exe

and you didn't answer my 3 questions.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going off-line for awhile. I'll get back to your thread later. (y)

No, net zero is not my ISP, I have AT&T high speed, keep net zero free, in case I have a problem with AT&T and have to get on the internet, which I've had, but I can get rid of it if needed and use the CD . I think I did have Norton on here when I bought it but was told to delete it when I installed AVG. I have an HP photosmart 3210 all in one that I think you helped me with a while back, couldn't get the scanner to work and DLed Irfanview which took care of it.

I unchecked the only thing that looked like it might be Adobe reader, and diskeeper was unchecked DKIcon C:\program files\disk, the only thing w/disk that I could find, Everything is abbreviated. Sending the new log and if Adobe is not unchecked then I unchecked the wrong thing. Be back this evening. Post whatever you want me to do and I'll do it. Thanks

I'm glad to hear that you have AT&T high-speed as your primary ISP and NetZero dial-up as a backup ISP when needed. I can't possibly imagine having to rely solely on 56K dial-up like I did up until about 9 years old. :(

Look in the startup list for an entry that looks similar to reader or reader_sl. That's the one that you want to uncheck. If you're still not sure which one it is, send me the list of the still-checked entries in the leftmost "Startup Item" column.

Go ahead and uncheck this startup entry:

    AlcxMonitor ALCXMNTR.EXE
    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=alcxmonitor

If you have a sound problem afterwards, recheck it. I don't think you will. I never have with it being unchecked.

Yep. Restart and then post a new HijackThis log.

    How is that machine running?
