I don't know if someone can help, and I am not sure if this is a malware issue or a hardware/software problem but I thought it best to start here.

I am looking at an Advent 7096 for a friend, it has the following spec
    Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3000+
    1.59GHz 896Mb of RAM

The problem that is running so slowly and the cpu fan is running almost non stop, although looking at Windows Task Manager there doesn't appear to be a consistent process which is causing this, although CPU keeps hitting 100%

I have run AdAware, SPybot and AVG Anti Spyware 7.5 and nothing significant was found, AVG AS 7.5 actually came up totally clear after Adaware and SPybot had been run and these only found a few cookies. I have run a full Av scan using Norton Internet Security which is installed on the machine, but when I tried to run an online scan at Panda it got about 60% through the scan and then hung and would not go any further so I haven't been able to complete this.

I have run HJT and the reports are below for someone to have a look at to see where we can go to get this laptop running properly.

When the laptop boots up the WIndows start sound is very slow and distorted but when windows closes down there is no distortion with the sound file that accompanies this.

Audio Cd output is very slow and consequently distorted.

Also on closing CCAPP.exe doesn't appear to close properly and I believe this is a Norton file, and some research has shown that Norton does appear to have the ability to crucify laptop performance, I don't know if this is the issue.

I have also restored to earlier restore points but this has not made any difference to the performance, and finally the network card says there are no available wireless networks, despite showing that is supposedly working ok, I have uninstalled this and re-installed but this has made no difference. There is a wireless net work which is available so I don't know what this indicates in this instance.

So I don't know if this is a malware problem, or software/hardware related. I thought it best to start here, I may be wrong, but I would be most grateful for any suggestions and if someone can look at the logs below.

    Cheers(y)

I don't see anything malicious in the logs so I'll move this over to the XP forum for assistance.

Is Norton up to date and has it been running together with AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 for awhile?

You can stop Messenger on startup would be a good idea.

How old is the laptop and has the heatsink been clean out lately?

If you have recently updated to IE7, one of the CPU hogs may be ctfmon.exe. While it is a native windows process, and has useful functions relating to the language bar and certain "Office" procedures, many users report problematic ctfmon activity after the IE7 installation. Fortunately, it is possible to turn it off without disabling its functionality in Office. Go to :Control Panel>Regional and Language Options>Languages>Details>Advanced, and check the box that says "Turn off advanced text services." If that creates problems, go back and turn it back on. Ctfmon uses a lot of CPU time. There are several processes in the log file that may be using resources that are not really required full time. I suggest a startup control program to reduce the number of processes that run in the background. While there are many excellent free applications that will do the job, I very much like WinPatrol for its value added features. http://www.winpatrol.com/ (also freeware)
For what I have learned about controlling my processes with URLs of useful tools and informational sites, see my Vox: http://doc1101.vox.com/ To visit the "links," copy and paste the URL to your browser address bar in a new tab.

Hi to answer your questions, yes Norton is up to date and no it hasn't been running with AVG Anti Spyware for long as I only installed AVG in last few days and Norton has been on the laptop for the last few months I believe.

The laptop is approx 18 months old and how do you go about cleaning out the heat sink?

The problem pre dates the installation of IE7 but I will try and see what effect stopping ctfmon.exe will have.

Thanks for the other suggestions I will look at the links as suggested and see what processes I can stop.

Cleaning the heatsink on mine is relatively easy but not sure about yours....but if it is clogged with dust then your PC will run slow and the fan will nearly always be ON to try and keep the processor cool.

    check here http://www.short-media.com/articles/clean_laptop_heatsink

You also might have a Conflict with Norton and AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5........Norton is a Memory Hog anyways.......you could get rid of Norton and get AVG Anti-Virus it is free.

If you do decide to try that then you will need the Norton Removal Tool Here

My wife has an Advent 7088 laptop and has recently had exctly the same problems.

I tried running antivirus and spyware and registry programs to no avail. So I did a system recovery - again to no avail. I even bought more memory but we still have the problem.

Searching around on google reveals that there are other Advent laptop users with the same problem. One person said that he found a partial cure by accident. It appears that the laptop overheats when the battery is fully charged and it is also plugged into the mains. So the fan goes mad.

If we now use the laptop using battery power alone the fan is quiet and the computer seems to function quicker. When the battery gets low only then do we plug it into the mains, and it seems happy.

It is not a full cure. We still get distorted sound at startup, but at least it's a reasonably quick startup now.
