I am thinking about trying to fix a frontend program in Visual Basic to work on XP, but I need advice. This is a program written by someone as a frontend Windows interface for a DOS program. The DOS program is maintained, but the writer of the frontend doesn't want to maintain it anymore. It works for Windows 98, but not XP. I would like to fix it, because I liked having the frontend in 98, but I'm moving to an XP PC.

I was a software engineer for 15 years until 1995. I worked with C and Unix. I am sure that I could learn Visual Basic or whatever, but I want to know what I'm getting into costwise and timewise.

Any suggestions about what would be the best course of action? Which would be less expensive to work with, VB or Java or something else? As far as I know, I don't have an Visual Basic development tools on the XP PC. Which would be easier for me to learn? Which would be more portable? Easier to maintain?

I appreciate any advice you all can give me. Thank you. :)
