I can have AIM running all day. I can see who is online, who signs in or signs off and i can read people's Away messages. However, the second I try to message someone, the message window will open partially, then AIM freezes for 3 or 4 secs and then shuts down completely.
If I switch user to a Guest profile on my XP OS I can use AIM no problem but not on my main, owner profile??

    Welcome to TSG! :)

These could be either 2 reasons.

    1. You have Earthlink

    or

    2. You're infected with something.

    Download Hijack This: http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Let it extract to C:\Program Files

    Close out any open browsers
    Launch the program
Click on "do a system scan only"
When that finishes, click on "save log"
The log will open in Notepad
Copy & paste that log into this thread

    Do not fix anything yet

    Uninstall Hyperbar from Add/Remove Programs.

Temporarily disable SpyBot's TeaTimer according to the directions here:
    http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

It will interfere with the changes we are trying to make.

With IE closed, run Hijack This again.
Put a checkmark on these entries and hit "fix checked":

    R3 - URLSearchHook: HyperSearchHook - {6B1E656D-3549-4295-98C6-71C3D189F00D} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hyperbar\HyperbarSS3.dll

Boot into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key at Startup, before the Windows logo screen)

Find and delete this folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hyperbar

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
    Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    Reboot, post a new log.

That's okay. I had a feeling it might not be there. Just proceed with the rest of the instructions. :)

Log looks fine now. Glad to hear the problem got resolved. :)

I should mention you should be careful with P2P programs (Warez) as they can come bundled with spyware. Just a heads up. ;)

Yeah, I've used Kazaa, BearShare and a couple of others in the past but they literally destroyed my computer.......Warez hasn't gave me any problems since I started using it........that said, did it cause the AIM problem or something else?

I can't say for sure that it was the cause. The newer versions of AIM are buggy. The problem clearly was malware related though.

I used to have so much trouble with ad/spy/malware......use Firefox now and never have any real problems, no pop ups even....the AIM thing was all.

I actually never had a virus problem at all....until I upgraded to AIM 5.9.
(Oddly enough). But hopefully they are fixing all those glitches. :)
