Hey, this computer is really messed up. When I try and run IE it usually freezes up the first time so I have to end-task it. The second attempt does the same thing, only after I end-task it I have to end-task explorer.exe and then run it again. Then after that I can make a third attempt on IE and while its loading the homepage (which it really isn't), if I tell it to go to another page instead, it will. Thus after 5 minutes I can finally surf the web. I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot but I think I still need some help if someone doesn't mind.

    hi, welcome to TSG.

    did you have aurora popups?

go to add/remove and uninstall Viewpoint Manager Viewpoint Toolbar and delete their folders from C:\program files.

you need to tuen off spysweepers protection as it will interfere with the fixes. Go to start/run/type msconfig/clock ok/click startup/uncheck the box for spysweeper/click ok and exit.

    Download the pocket killbox

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

    download ccleaner

    http://www.ccleaner.com/

    * Install CCleaner
    * Launch CCleaner and look in the upper right corner and click on the "Options" button.
    * Click "Advanced" and remove the check by "Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hours".
    * Click OK
    * Do not run CCleaner yet. You will run it later in safe mode.

    * Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here

    http://www.ewido.net/en/

    * Install ewido.
    * During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    * Launch ewido
    * It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
    * On the left side of the main screen click update
    * Click on Start and let it update.

    * Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know
    how.

How to boot to safe mode

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

    * Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill.
In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste each of the following
lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the
X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confirmation to
delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have
copied and pasted all of these in the Paste Full Path of File to Delete box.

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not
exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you
    don't miss any.

    * When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
    * Save the report to your desktop

    Now run ccleaner.

Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it.
Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you
    can delete it yourself.
    - Save the results from the scan!

Thanks for responding, sorry I've taken a little while to get back to you. I made the original post the night before I left for a short vacation. I did everything you listed as best I could. IE is working better, but when I first go to launch it, it loads very slow and I usually just click stop or hit Esc then put in the new address and hit enter. After that it usually works fine. Also the panda virus scan never had a delete option. Ok, here are the logs you asked for.

The activescan log was too big to paste so I tried to attach it, I hope I did it right. Let me know if I didn't so I can fix it.

Thanks for the help. To answer your question I have no idea whether this computer ever had aurora popups. It seems to have a lot of problems. There's a bar at the top of IE that I've never seen on any other computer and occasionally while in IE a bar/menu/window (not really sure how to describe it) pops up. It's quite annoying and I have no idea what it is or where it came from.

Download and run the lop uninstaller

    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/downloads.htm

go here and empty these folders.

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default,
Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden
files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View
tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also
uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for
known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    C:\Documents and Settings\Ty\Local Settings\Temp\<---empty this folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ty\Local Settings\Temporary Internet <---empty this folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\<---empty this folder

    delete these folders if there.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Read and
Accept the agreement. Click the Install button to extract the files
and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your
desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log
by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and
it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad
will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into
    this thread.

post another log and the l2me log

    EDIT:
After opening IE a few times with no problem, it went to a different homepage. Something such as search2020.com. Also every so often when I run HijackThis this entry shows up. "R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.ncdtogxwtnyamchl.com/lyKWnnPdXGyFckVDPhjfMpB8GLah3j1OPyEWY4HoQwEew0vARDwj6Ehh0jpp0KQF.htm"

I always check it and tell it to fix it, but it comes back every 2nd or 3rd scan of HJT.

    clean log.

check in add/remove for any suspicious programmes or toolbars and especially this search2020 or anything like search or search this!

ok that entry looks like the peppertrojan.

First, we need to get rid of the Peper.A infection.

Download and run this tool (you must remain online while running it):

    http://www.subratam.org/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=41

There'll be no window nor any dialogue ... it will just run and quit. You
    must restart your computer afterwards.

Did you install party poker if not have hijack this fix this and remove it from add/remove. The delete it's folder from C:\program files.

    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker.net\partypokernet.exe
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program
    Files\PartyPoker.net\partypokernet.exe

If you are clean do this, make sure that entry doesn't keep coming back?

you should now turn off system restore to flush out the bad restore points and
then re-enable it and make a new clean restore point.

here's some free tools to keep you from getting infected in the future.

to stop reinfection get these two tools, spywareguard and spywareblaster
    from

    www.javacoolsoftware.com

get the hosts file from here.

    put it into :

    Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

ie-spyad.Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected

when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

    https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

    http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html

    prevX: it stops spyware

    http://www.prevx.com/prevxhome.asp

Use spybot's immunize button and use spywareblaster' enable
protection once you update it. you can put spybot's hosts file into
your own and lock it. Plus you can also turn on spybot's tea timer
    for added protection against pests.

I would also suggest switching to Mozilla's firefox browser, it's safer, has a built in pop up blocker, blocks cookies and adds.

Ok, I removed "veiwpoint toolbar" But I still have a toolbar at the top of the screen. The tabs on the toolbar change as I change sites, I'm not sure it's working the way it's supposed to. If you'd like I'll take a screen shot. Also the file "PLAY ERROR SIZE" shows up in places where I thought I had already deleted it. I'm including a log becuase that one entry is still showing up, and the program to find the pepper trojan said it didn't find the pepper trojan. I didn't download anything from javacool yet because I want to make sure this machine is clean first. (It already has spyblaster.) Again thanks for helping and sorry for my delays between responses.

    EDIT:
I keep forgetting to mention this. The SP2 pop-up blocker doesn't seem to be working correctly. I've checked the settings several times now, but it isn't making a noise or showing an information bar when it blocks pop-ups, that or it just isn't blocking pop-ups. I'm not sure why it isn't since it is on and set to "medium".

The evil evil bars in IE seem to be gone and will hopefully stay that way. I haven't installed any of the protective software yet, I want you to make sure my log is clean first. I will probably get spyguard after I post this reply. Thanks for the help and I hope this log is a nice clean one and the problems stay away.

have hijack this fix this leftover.
