'm having problems sending Word documents to certain email accounts. It seems that higher security accounts won't open them, but lower security (yahoo) wil open them. I had the problem a few weeks ago. I ran an spyware clean up program and it seemed to fix the problem. But now it's happening again and the clean up didn't help. any ideas?

There could be spyware a virus on your system, or you could have macros in your documents that the higher security accounts will refuse.
Get a copy of HijackThis at http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php
and post the results - that will help others to know what is on your system better if you think it is something nasty, or try to post a document if you think it is a macro....

I don't see anything wrong there - no processes that I wouldn't expect. Can you upload a document that has caused trouble? You may want to delete anything that could be personal or confidential - just want to see if there are macros involved.

actually, it won't let me uplaod. Tech Guy says "Invalid file." I tried uploading the one I had trouble with today. When that didn't work, I opened word and created a new file, but Tech Guy wouldn't take that one either. Finally, I tried uploading one that I sent with no problems a few weeks ago, and Tech Guy wouldn't take that one either.

I can send them from yahoo to another email account (Windows Small Business Server), which won't open them. But then I can forward them from WSBS back to myself at yahoo, and I can open them fine.

That's what I was going to say .. but you took the words right off my keyboard.

Also .. Windows will Zip .. Anything copied or drug to a zipped folder ..
and it will unzip anything removed (drug out) of a zipped folder.

It opens just fine here ... and my scans says it's clean

So you don't have any idea what the problem could be? I send attachments to my boss all the time. About a month ago, he and another collegue couldn't open them, but other collegues could. We all use different email servers. If I send it from a Windows Small Business Server email account and try to open it in the same account, the "page cannot be found" error message appears. If I try to save it to disk, when I open it, Word opens and the graphics of "page cannot be found" error message appear, as if cut and pasted into a word doc. But the attachment icon in the email says .doc and appears to be an appropriate size. When I forward them back to my yahoo account, they open fine.

This same thing was happening a month ago and I ran a spyware clean-up, which seemed to fix the problem. But when it started happening again yesterday, I ran the spyware (which found 1 critical object), but it didn't solve the problem.

Plus, Tech Guy wouldn't let me post it, even though it's a small file. Could there be something corrupted in Word? The Microsoft SBS email wouldn't open files that worked fine a few days ago either. I'm stumped (not that it takes much to stump me).

I found nothing wrong with the file either - passed spyware and anti-virus tests and opened up with no problems in Word for me. One thing I did find in Word under Tools, Options, Security is a box that says "Warn before printing, saving or sending a file that contains tracked changes or comments." If you are sharing this with others who have that checked and you have tracked changes or comments (it appears you do) that might be causing the problem. Also under that same tab is a Macro Security options list - if it is set to very high and you have any macros (not that I could find any traces of any) that could be their problem. But frankly, I am stumped - there is no reason they should not be able to receive the file and open it. Have you tried zipping it and sending it to them like that? Sometimes that can be a workaround.

TSG doesn't accept uploaded **.doc files .. That's why I told you to zip it.

    I'm stumped also ...
I just wanted to bump you along so others (the real wizards) could look at your doc file....
    When they wake up....

    edit ... Good morning slurpee

i tried zipping it and sending it along. i still can't open it in windows small business server, but come to think of it, I've never been able to unzip files from that account; I always have to ask people to unzip them and send them again. The error message is usually "invalid or corrupted file" or if i try to extract the files without opening the folder, the message is "no files to extract."

but again, i was able to open the zipped file in my yahoo account, even after it had been forwarded through the windows SBS account.

the funny thing is, i send files to my boss almost daily. always the same types of files--always edited (reviewed) manuscripts, always about the same size (<1MB).

The problem is that it's not just this one file. I can't send him ANY files, even ones that worked fine a day or two ago. I can't even send him files that I haven't opened yet. So I kinda need to figure out what the problem is; I can't keep sending him zipped files 2x a day...

    Hi Gang,
Try to send a copy of the files you can't send to your boss (make a copy and rename it) back to yourself and see if your server has problems with them. If you have no problems with it, then at least you eliminate that much of the possible trail of problems.
