I have a AMD 2400 CPU with 256 mb Ram running Win XP SP2. Off late I found that the system hangs after being on for about 20 mins. So I formatted the HDD (clever me!!) and now the problem has worsened as Win XP SP2 does not even get installed. The CD is read and things r loaded. Then it waits for the 1st reboot and waits and waits. Finally it just restarts and we r back 2 square 1.
Help me out guys n thx in advance

I suggest you do some basic hardware diagnostics. The two places I'd start is downloading the hard disk manufacturer's diagnostic and doing a full surface scan, and running a memory test for several hours.

20mins... Have you checked the CPU cooling fan? If its been a few years (AMD Xp2400) - the fan might have failed or is dirty and may need replacing.

What is the TEMP of your CPU? Can you check in BIOS or by software (Usually hitting DEL a few times when you first turn on the PC will get you into BIOS, or F1) and locate something that shows the TEMP of the CPU and the RPMs of the cooler (both are on the same page).
