    Hi there pals!
I was wondering what are those grey squares that appear at the top of Word 2013 when I press Alt and of their use.
    Attaching screenshot.
    Thanks.

Not exactly sure what they are for, but they are part of the Quick Access menu, I'd look under the "More Commands" under the Quick Access bar to remove the,. To access the the Quick Access options click the line with the down arrow to the right of those icons to get the drop down menu.

If you were to press the "Alt" key they should disappear.

Oh do you mean the boxes with the numbers and letters? I thought you mean the boxes behind those, should have read better and clicked into the ALT part. The reason those pop up is because they are used for keyboard shortcuts to access those menus or options. So if you press ALT and A it opens the Apxeio(File?) menu.
