Hi all,
I'm trying to fix an issue with my brother HP desktop PC running windows 10.
The PC works fine no issues.
However, windows need to to an update, it will download it, but during the installation it stalls (we had it running all night) the circle goes round and round........
The only way to stop it is to unplug the mains, once we boot up again it reports "We coudn't complete the upgrade winding back changes" and reverts back to the pre-update status.
Then obviously tries to download the same updates again and around we go again.
I tried various fixes that i read on-line but nothing works.
Any suggestions? what additional information can I provide to help

The updates are:
Security intelligence update KB2267602 Version 1.337.631.0
Featured updates windows 10 20H2
Microsoft printer 6.1.7233.1

Thanks

KB2267602 is NOT an update for the Windows 10 operating system.
It is a definition update for its built-in antivirus app - Windows Security aka Windows Defender.

What is the exact KB numbers of the featured updates that you are having an issue with?

Type winver in the search box, then press the Enter key.
What is the exact "Version" and "OS Build" numbers in the same window that appears?

At least I can exclude one culprit, although still it gets not installed or updated.

Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.746)

It is an important update if you are using Windows Defender as your default antivirus.

Try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot from the menu at the left.

Then choose Additional Troubleshooters and choose Windows Update.

Let the troubleshooter to run.

If it shows you that it fixed certain things, run the updates again and check if you are still getting an error.

nope! it downloads and installs the update, restarts and hangs on the black screen. I did a file scan with the command SFC /scannow looks to be errors or corrupted files but I can't make any sense of the report.

Dr.M I ran the command because when the PC hangs on the black screen nothing will stop it. The only way out is to either unplug the main or force the shutdown with the power button. the result is that it will then start normally but goes back to the pre-upgrade status and the loop starts again where windows wants to download the upgrade again.
Will do over the week-end, as I want be able to get to it in the next day or two.

Ok, i think i have fixed it, i put an image of the windows installation file on a usb, run the setup file from the usb and did a windows install but ticked tho option of keeping settings and personal files.
It has taken over 5 hours, but all the personal files are still there and the programs are all there and can be launched withaut having to re-install them.:)
Thank you all for your assistance.
