I have a HP Pavilion 734n. Due to a corruption of my XP operating system and the restore partition, I had to reformat the HD and try to reload XP Home. Since I bought the HP off the shelf at Circuit City a few years back, I did not have the XP disc.

So I bought an XP Home Edition Upgrade, since I had a official Win98 disc. I begin the process, get past the partition page and get about 25% into the install and get multiple messages saying .dll files are not being copied correctly, it also says:

The file Setup placed on your HD is not a valid Windows XP system image. If you are installing from a CD, there may be a problem with the Windows XP CD.

After several attempts, I took the disc back to the store and exchanged it for another. Tried again, same problem. I've also tried it in both the DVD player and the CD player.

This is driving me crazy. It's basically a clean install, but it is not working.

There is another possibility that there might be a problem with the hard drive. Since you have an original Windows 98 install cd and that installation starts off by checking the hard drive I suggest running it. If you have a Windows 98 startup disk see if you have format.exe on it and when booted with it run this command format c: and let the hard drive format. After a successful format then re-run the windows XP install disk. Actually you should have gotten a full installation disk for Windows XP they are less trouble.
