Hello,
I'm new here and this place seems a great site for idiots like me to get help.
Anyway, the problem:
A couple of years ago we bought a computer that already had anti-virus -spyware installed, called "Norton Internet Security 2005", and about a year ago it stopped working. The subscription ended, but we figured that was okay since no one went on any dodgy sites. A few months ago we took out a subscription with Tesco Internet Security, but we can't seem to get it onto the computer because it says we have to remove the Norton Internet Security programme, but we can't. There's nothing that remotely says 'press here to get this damned programme off the computer'. It's since transpired that the brother in-law has used our computer for, let's just say, his "lusts" for months. And I believe the computer to be infected with viruses and such.

If you wouldn't mind, I need a lot of help to change from Norton Internet Security to Tesco Internet Security. Please? It's a pretty desperate situation...

Thanks in advance for your help,

Mac

P.S. Sorry if this has been posted before, the computer is slow so I can't search effectively.

Cheers, John! I happen to believe in the old proverb 'You'll never plow a field by turning it over in your mind.' So I'll be trying that link you gave me now and hope for the best before the computer goes boom...

Oh yes, it worked! Thanks a lot, John!
I did what you said with the 'Hijack This' file and the result, I think, was a long list of jargon or something:

Well nearly right mate!! You need to save HijackThis to a permanent folder in your documents and settings as it will be removed by what an administrator tells you to do!! You have it in your temp folder and you need to re-download it sending it to your documents and settings, when you've done that just sit tight and wait for a gold shield to assist you, post another log when you've done it

By the way your Java is out of date, Java 1.5 has security issues, so go here http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and download it. DO NOT INSTALL YET! Then, when it is saved, go to control panel add/remove programmes and remove Java 1.5 and all subsidaries, you may find Java has two or three locations on your add/remove panel remove them all then install JRE 6

Hey,

Thanks again John. But I don't really know what a permanent folder is...Actually, I know it's a folder and that it's permanent, but I wouldn't know where to find one.

Ok ravenson! You downloaded HijackThis to a temporary folder, when you download it you need to direct it to your program files or your documents and settings, if you locate HijackThis you can move it manually to a permanent folder, its just that it will not work from your temp folders simply because they will invariably be deleted as part of your clean up process
