is there any software that you can use to boot from to scan viruses before going to normal mode or safe mode, something you can boot from and launch an anti virus scan???

Hi, For older operating systems there were some, F-Prot for DOS was one I used for win9x systems but only very rarely came across anything that kept the computer from booting....a boot sector virus, yes I have seen one of those, which I did fix with F-Prot from floppy disks.

In XP- Sophos is one that has a DOS mode tool that runs from the Sophos CD, so you can try looking for that kind of thing.

Here's just a quick Google result searching for:

"antivirus scan DOS mode for XP from disks"

    http://www.google.com/search?source...2&q=antivirus+scan+DOS+mode+for+XP+from+disks

Some good things there. Hope this helps. It says there is still F-Prot for XP available. You'd need a bootable CD that loads a floppy image, or an actual floppy drive to run the diskette version. It did take 3 floppies when I used it a few years ago.
