My avast antivirus software keeps detecting recurring instances of a Win32: Sality virus, along with Malas.B [wrm]. I scanned the infected files with an online Kapersky tool, and it said they were infected with P2P-Worm.Win32.Malas.r.

I've been getting these messages every once in a while for a month or two now. I've scheduled boot-time virus scans with avast, and other anti-virus programs without successfully detecting anything.

I've noticed some of my processes refuse to exit, even though I start task manager to end the process/process tree. Such includes Firefox and Chrome processes, even though the programs have already disappeared from the screen. Additionally, whenever I start Avast, I am blocked from accessing the internet with chrome, internet explorer, or firefox.

Could anyone lend a hand? Thanks!

I'm also noticing that in my public folder, a "sexscreensaver.exe" is appearing everytime I reboot (as I quarantine it with Avast everytime). This seems to be the only manifestation of the virus...

I tried using SmitfraudFix, but the same file still appeared. Here are the results:

I've also run Malwarebytes, full system scan. However, it came up with I think two false positives:

    Trojan.lop Registry Key Bitdownload
Hijack.Search Registry Data IE Search Local Page...

I reboot, but the virus still shows up.

I've just recently scanned my computer twice with ad-aware and counterspy. Ad-aware detected a Win32.Trojan.Spy and counterspy detected nothing. After reboot, ad-aware detected nothing, and counterspy detected win32.sality.ek.

I tried using Panda online activescan; Firefox crashes midway through the scan though every time.

I also noticed that once I reinstalled Avast Antivirus, the "sexscreensaver.exe" showed up again in the public folder.

Here is a new HijackThis log:

I'm reading that the advice on this board is to backup and reformat. I would do that, but I'm only detecting one manifestation of sality in my entire computer. Multiple antivirus scans have either detected nothing or detected solely that one file in my public folder.

Update: Another curious thing, when I scan the infected file with malwarebytes, ad-aware, and superantivirus, they detect nothing. Only avast and counterspy detect either Win32: Sality or Win32: Malas-B [Wrm].

The virus also appears occasionally (every other reboot) in the public folder and does not seem to be affecting computer function. What should I do?

Here is a current hjt log:

The best fix, as you stated, is to format and reload the machine.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Kaspersky online scanner uses JAVA tecnology to perform the scan. If you do not have the latest JAVA version, follow the instrutions below under Upgrading Java, to download and install the latest vesion.

    • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    • Make sure the following is checked.
      • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
        [*]Archives
        [*]Mail databases
    • Click on My Computer under Scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
    • Please post this log in your next reply.

    Upgrading Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14.
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
    • Click on Continue.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator".)

    Hey, thanks for helping.

I uninstalled all java, and rebooted. I ran the installation as an admin (I had the file from before), but I'm unable to actually download java; I get this message:

Then I try the offline installation, but I am unable to access both java and sun websites. Chrome, IE, and FF all say that "This webpage is not available," the page timed out, or server not found.

I repeat all of this with all my security software turned off, including windows firewall, but I am unable to access or download anything regarding java or sun. All other website work fine for me, which is very puzzling for me.

I was initially unable to install java due to Error 20599 Core Files failed to unzip. After removing all instances of old java from the comp, I was able to install it. I am still unable to access java/sun websites or update java.

I went to the Kaspersky online scanner, but eventually, the scan failed as the Java applet could not initialize. I'm downloading the virus removal tool from Kaspersky (v.7, 30 mb) instead.

Do you have any idea what's happening to java?

Java can be difficult sometimes, keep working with it and it will eventually install.

I ran Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool in safe mode, but nothing was detected. So I did their manual cure, and got a list of things for which a script is necessary to act on any suspicious items. Attached, I have a log of that. I will continue working on the java installation.

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and allow to run the express scan
    • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
    • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
    • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
    • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Hey, so I managed to spot another instance of the virus in the public folder. I'm just going to scan that first, then do a complete system scan.
Here is what Dr. Web CureIt found.

    SexScreenSaver.exe;C:\Users\Public;Win32.Sector.5;Cured.;
    SexScreenSaver.exe;C:\Users\Public;Win32.HLLW.Asalam;Deleted.;
I do not know if they are different names for sality or malas.

I am unable to do a full system scan with Dr. Web CureIt, because 30 seconds into the full scan, I get a blue error screen for less than half a second. My computer then restarts... This has happened three times.

I'm also seeing a file called SexScreenSaverlib.exe, associated with Win32.Sector.5.
