I have a failed hard drive. At boot time BIOS says Slave Hard Drive Error and then the drive does not show up in the Computer Manager. Is there any way to mount it (either in Linux or whatever) and run chkdsk or at least copy files?

I am running Windows XP Pro.

Unless the bios IDs the drive, you are wasting your time attempting to run any type of diagnostic app.

Reseat the data and power cables for the drive. Power on and see if the bios recognizes the drive.

Have you tried a new cable and or different power connector?

That's what I figure. I'll have to send the drive out for recovery.
    Thanks for answering.
