What are you trying to access and do you know how you're logging on, ie. do you have administrator rights?

Hey guys one of my friends is having the same trouble it seems to have started since windows automatically installed some security updates. Does anyone know how to roll them back. I can't seem to access anything either. I have even tried some of the solutions from one of the other threads on this site but they haven't worked either. I can't even click on the run cmd.

    Yeah that's what I've stared thinking is the problem...but i wasn't sure..

It seems the only way to go online or to access something is when I'm in Safe Mode. I've also done a System Restore 4 times but every time i log on to the computer the next day i get the same message again.

"Windows cannot access to the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

For my situation yes the only account is the administrator account, and for me it is when trying to access anything on the desktop, I even got the same message when going through the start menu.

I can reach the cmd window if I access through the task manager and then click file, run new task but other than that I haven't been having much luck.

I am having the same problem. I followed the instructions on the thread/thread starter-

Solved: User Access Denied to all Exe files and programs/
    Thread starter- TheMic056

    It's not a permanent fix, I don't update either. :(
But I have been able to utilize with out having to be in safemode. Hope this helps.

I think i have fixed this error for those with Trend Micro, i'm not sure if it will work with other virus scanners and firewalls?

If you recently did a windows update and are now getting an error message stating "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." This is when you try any access programs like office, users, windows firewall etc.

Go into the Console and click on Virus and Spy ware Control. Then click on Suspicious software alarm system, go to the exception list and allow explorer.exe or any other common files that might have been denied.

If you can’t open the console, Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and open the task manager. Hold down Ctrl and click File > Run. This will open a command prompt. Type "C:\program files\trend micro\internet security 2007\pccmain.exe" (with quotes). (or where ever you have installed it) This will open the Trend PC-cillin console.

This worked on my friends computer it is as good as new now.
