I recently installed some software. I got a warning that the APPS.INF file was missing and to reinstall it from the Windows CD into the Windows INF folder. I checked the CD and could find no file with such a name. Any suggestions, or do I just reinstall Win98?

Hi,

It is on your Win98 CD-ROM, but it's hidden in a cab file.

Do this:

Make sure your Windows CD-ROM's in the drive.
Go to Start/run, and type SFC.
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk'.
Type apps.inf, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file’s location, which is probably in the Win98 folder of your installation CD-ROM (typically D:\Win98). Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\Inf, and click OK. System File Checker looks for the file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been successfully extracted'.

Good luck,

Thanks for the help, but unfortunately, the file is not on the CD, either in the Win98 folder or otherwise. Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Did you run SFC, like I've advised you to do?

The file certainly is on my Win98 SE CD.
Do you have any reason to assume that yours is any different?

It's Win 98 First edition, and I don't have a file list for that version available, I'm afraid.

Here are the MS Knowledge Base article numbers.

SFC should have been able to find it. If you go to Find Files and put the CD in the drive. Second Step is to type *.cab in the Named Box.
Third. Type Apps.inf in the Containing text
Fourth.
In the look in box:
F:\win98 or E:\win98 or whatever your drive letter is.
Then you can extract it to C:\winodws\inf

Win98 FE it's here: N:\win98\WIN98_44.CAB
Where N is the CD drive

(apps.inf) I found it using the find files method I described. SFC wouldn't do it. When that's the case, use this method before giving up. Good Luck.
