I want to replace my laptop's 1TB HDD with something much larger but a friend of mine told me that laptop hard drives aren't available in capacities larger than 2TB. My laptop has only one HDD slot so I want to get a very larger HDD. Am I limited to 2TB? Thank you.
Allan is correct, HDDs are cheaper. 5TB Drive @ $137 right now. The issue with HDDs (mechanical drives) is that they can get damaged and more worn down because of the moving parts.
Thank you for your replies. Yes, I am looking for a larger HDD, NOT SSD. I already have a 2TB SSD. I'm sorry, I should have clarified. Specifically, I was told that 2.5" HDD are not available in capacities larger than 2TB. Is this true? Unfortunately, I don't yet know the thickness of my current HDD. I'm looking to increase HDD capacity beyond 4TB.
I believe older laptops can use either a 7mm or a 9mm thick HDD, but newer laptops can use only a 7mm thick HDD.
Someone else here can correct me if I'm wrong.
The cheapest 4 TB HDD I found for a laptop is about $138.00, but it's listed as being 15mm thick.
That seems pretty thick to me to fit inside a laptop.
Thanks everyone. I'm not confident opening up this particular laptop so I'm going to go to a computer repair guy and see what they can do.
