Whenever I get a virus/worm I zip the file and save it so I can have evidence of it being on my computer.

Is it true that regardless of however damaging the virus is, when it is compressed with zip (WinZip), rar (WinRAR) or 7z (7zip) it is useless?

Isn't this what quarantining does in virus/spyware scanners?

I understand that, just like with .exe files, that a script could cause it to decompress and execute, but this is beyond the point of discussion.

Whether its compressed or not, the file is harmless as long as it isn't executed. Quarantined files are typically put in a password-protected ZIP to prevent them from running though
