Ok. So I have my windows CD key. A friend is selling me a motherboard, with a quad core 6700, and windows vista for 300. (No it's not stolen, we work retail and we get things cheap via the intel retail edge thing. She actually won it at an Intel meeting, though.)

Anyways, I was told I would have to reinstall windows XP. I used a program called Magical Jellybean Keyfinder and got my CD key, due to the fact nobody in the house knows what happened to the software after we moved.

My friend is going to lend me his XP CD, would that be sufficent enough to reinstall Windows, and if not, will I have to jump backwards through hoops?

I'm already paying 300 for that, I need to buy ram which is gonna be another 100, I can't afford 100 dollars yet AGAIN to by XP (for the 4th time no less.)

I'm NOT asking for keygens, or anyones cd key. I just want to know if having my CURRENT CD key will work once I switch out the motherboards, and if not, can I call windows and let them know, will they let me do that if I switch out parts?

(I dont want Windows Vista, I'll use it as a last resort. )

The key should work fine. Activating may not, but calling the number (activating by phone) should resolve that problem.

The only reason that the key may not work is if your machine came with XP pre-installed and the key belongs to a group licensed by the manufacturer. In that case, the key will only work on versions specifically for that machine from the same manufacturer. For example, if you bought a Dell and Dell installed the XP and there is a sticker on your machine, a standard XP will not install. Only Dell's version will install with that key.
