It's tough to come up with something without some information.

    The driver never worked properly?
    It's a DVD burner?
    What operating system is running?
What software are you using to burn data?
What error messages do you receive?

    In answer,
It works sometimes but not others
Yes, it is a DVD burner
    I am using Vista
I am using Vista's software to burn, i think this may be the problem
    The error message read:
This disc can not be burnt as it is write protected
    Does this help?

Just a thought here, but if you suspect Vista burning software could be the culprit, why not just pick up a freeware burning software, and see how your machine reacts using it ? There are some found here: http://www.tech-faq.com/free-dvd-burning-software.shtml (Note: pick one for your vista platform.)
