It's an MSN virus and I did a bit of research and couldn't find really where to start (MSN viruses are popular as most of you know). I received a request from a good friend of mine (his computer also got messed up pretty bad) to accept a picture. I was slightly wary about it as it was zipped and scanned it with Trend Micro PC-Cillin and got nothing wrong with it so I of course tried to open it. Well after i opened it PC-Cillin decided it was wrong and I'd pretty much screwed up. The file name was gen 7[1].exe. After having it also send the request to everyone on my contacts list I rebooted using a BartPE boot disc so I could scan with PC-Cillin (it doesn't scan in safe mode). PC-Cillin detected a virus but gave it the name of PAK_Generic .005. A little research basically told me that PC-Cillin knew it was bad but didn't really know what it was (go figure). I tried to remove it and it said I had it removed but you can all guess what happened when i attempted to restart MSN Messenger. I managed to get a warning in my personal message to not accept any files from me. I really don't know where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.

Just ran Ad-Aware and it found a few things that may be relevant. I'm going to post a HiJackThis log soon.

This gentlemen has the exact same virus as me. http://forums.techguy.org/malware-removal-hijackthis-logs/644493-windows-live-messenger-virus.html?

Still requesting help and I see that some people have had a similiar mutation of the virus but I want to be sure my copy is the same before following any instructions.

Problem solved. I will post what I did to solve this problem here for others to use as a reference.

The ImgXX.zip virus came from China apparently and is quite nasty. The first thing you have to do is get it out of your registry.

-Go to run and type in regedit
-The virus has inserted a registry key in the following location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run
-Look for the "Volume Shadow Organizer" = "nvbsvc.exe" and delete it (see below if you can't find this as it could have a different name)
-Restart Windows.
-Go to you C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder and make sure you have it set to show hidden files and that you can see Windows operating system files (the virus masks itself as one of these).
-Find the nvbsvc.exe and Shift+Delete it.
-Now go to your temp folder and search for the file that gave you the virus (ImgXX.zip) and Shift+Delete that as well.

After doing that I have not had any problems with MSN. Other names besides Volume Shadow Organizer may be used. Some people have had "Remote Terminal Service" = "rpmsvc.exe." Hope this helps some people in the future.
