    Hello,

I am very computer illiterate but somehow I managed to get some of my other computer problems solved yesterday.

The problem is though, that during all of that, I discovered that when I click on MY COMPUTER, the DVD RW thing is no longer there, I cannot play CDs any longer.

I had uninstalled Nero Essentials that a computer repair guy had installed onto my computer without me knowing he was going to do that. And without realizing it would do any harm to my computer, I had uninstalled it. So I am not sure but I think that may have had something to do with me now having the missing DVD RW drive. I looked and on my computer under Drives it says ASUS DRW-20B1LT.

Does anybody have any idea how to fix this? I tried going to my RUN thing and typing in
devmgmt.msc and it brought up the thing where it says ASUS DRW-20B1LT and there is a yellow exclammation point next to it. Next I tried uninstalling that and then asking the computer to find and install new stuff. Still I can not find the DVD RW drive. I then tried reinstalling the Nero Essentials but when I got to the end of the installation it said no longer available and that I'd have to buy it, which I cannot afford to do. I did however install Nero 12 last night.

So thats as far as I have gotten with it. I tried going to the ASUS place online but there isnt anything there about DVD Drives.

    Can anyone help please?

    Claudia

well I tried doing the fix it thing but honestly I was confused about what exactlyit is asking me to do. But what I tried did not work. I also tried downloading the ASUS DRW-20B1lt file from another page and installing that but I still do not see any DVD RW drive on my computer at all. It keeps saying things about "connecting" it but I dont have a clue what that means. On the troubleshooting thing.

Using the trouble shooter, I also tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it. The bubble thing comes up saying it found new hardware... and it shows the ASUS thing, but then it says "a problem occurred during the installing" or something like that. And the DVD RW thing still isnt there. I tried putting in a CD and nothing happens.

I notice this Mr Fixit thing says

    a. Click Start, and then click Run. Or click Start Search.
    b. Type “diskmgmt.msc” (without the quotes), and then press ENTER
    c. Verify that the CD/DVD device is assigned a drive letter (for example, “D:”)
    d. If the device does not have a drive letter, then right mouse click on the CD-ROM (highlighted in red above), and select Change Drive Letters and Paths
    e. Click Add, click Assign the following drive letter, and then click a drive letter from the list
f: Click OK twice, and then close Disk Management

When I type that it and it opens it up, I dont see any drive letter there. It just says

    ASUS DRW-20BiLT

There is NO letter there. But if I right click on it, there also isnt anything there that says "Change drive letters and paths."

You either need to use the Automated Fixit from the website or manually edit the registry to resolve the issue; uninstalling the device will not work.

You need to click the green "Run Now" button to begin the Fixit installation then go through the wizard.

This has been solved by installing the ASUS firmware for the optical drive so I'll close this thread now.
