I just recently purchased a new computer and have been watching carefully what I click on, what is downloaded, etc. Now I have started to have some problems. My Norton Anti Virus keeps telling me it has detected and deleted a virus "backdoor.trojan", this always pops up twice back to back. Ran a scan on my computer and I have all the at risk files (adware) that I cannot delete. What do I do? I tried to copy to files, but I couldn't. I'm sure that this has been addressed before, but I could not find anything. Please help as I am clueless when it comes to stuff like this. Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Hi, You sometimes (most often) need special programs to deal with ad-related stuff. We reccommend at least you have these: AdAware SE personal edition (free) it is very good, and they also have a version you can buy.

    SpyBot Search and Destroy 1.3

They are found here, in a list of anti-spyware tools:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Here are the directions for installing each:

Even though you are just now installing either, there will be online updates you must get> the directions tell you just how to do that. It is safe to let AAW and SS&D remove all they find, and each makes backups for safety's sake.

You should first post a Hijackthis log>
Here are the directions for using it to save a logfile and to Copy/Paste it into Notepad and then into a Reply, right here in this thread...paste the entire log as a reply in your thread.

    http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/

    Download it here:

    http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

You must make a new folder, the desktop is OK provided you make a folder there, name it something like HJT, and run hijackthis.exe from that folder. To make a new folder on the desktop, right click any empty place of desktop, in your background is OK) and select New> Folder that will create the new folder, simply rename it to HJT or what you like. Download HijackThis.exe to that folder.

Here it is, hope I did it right. I did this first so I haven't downloaded spybot, etc. yet until I hear from you.

Hi, Check in Change or Remove Programs, ((or Add/Remove Programs))
uninstall any of these you see there:
    WebRebates ((SavingsfromRebates, or similar))
    Internet Optimizer

NewdotNet<-----probably not there, just make sure
WhenU ---you may not see some of these, OK.
    SaveNow
    Save
    ClearSearch
    Twain_Tech

    ________________

Get and install as per directions above:

    AdAware

    Spybot

update them and scan with both.

That should clear up a lot of things...then, post a new HJT log. You should be offline (and pull the phone line or network cable out of back of computer) AFTER you get both programs and their updates.

Either program works in safe mode if they give you trouble in Normal mode.

To boot to safe mode, tap the F8 key several times at bootup, when the menu comes up, select Safe Mode, which is just a diagnostic mode of Windows, the video is funny but that is normal. Start AAW and scan, remove files with it, and then do the same with SpyBot. The programs may want you to restart to clean up some files that were in use, do that as it says.
Post new HJT log when done, here as a reply in your thread. Good luck.

Thanks, I will go ahead and post that I see the WebRebates, I click on Remove and it does nothing. I will go ahead and download what you have suggested and run those, then will check back here later. Thanks.

Yes, the uninstallers often do not work. Adaware will find it I am pretty sure. Get back when you can. Good work.

    Hi,
Print this info if you can- or, save it to a text file someplace.

(Your folder might be under\Documents and Settings\ your user name)temp etc....

    NEXT:
Run Hijackthis and with ALL other windows/browsers closed, fix these entries only, do not miss any:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ydcvlhs.exe
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?T...lion&pf=desktop

Open Windows Explorer, and find these files and delete them, not folders:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ydcvlhs.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\mxTarget.dll

    C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe

    C:\Program Files\VVSN\VVSN.exe

Find the C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates folder and delete it.

Empty the Recycle Bin, give it plenty of time to finish.

Post a new HJT log when you are ready. Going out for just a few minutes and will be back!

Yes, I will do this. I have looked at the first two to edit and it does not look like I have those files. Maybe I just need to step away for a little while. One question, is all of this safe to do?

hi, Do you mean the R1 entries like these:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?T...lion&pf=desktop

If so, delete all of them that appear when you run HJT.

If you mean any of the files...did you unhide hidden files, in Windows Explorer?

Some of the files shown at the last step may not be found, it does happen quite often, just look very well for them..

It's as safe as can be- based on experience I can tell you that Hijackthis makes backups, thats why we have you run it from its own folder, so the backups get stored there.
They can be replaced if anything is needed.

When you scan with AdAware....you can right click on one "little box" in the window of found items, and select "Select ALL items" >>that will put ticks in all items for removal..then click "NEXT" to have all the items removed to Quarantine. AdAware makes backups that can easily be restored.
    Hijackthis and SpyBot do also.
