i don't know much about video cadrs- it's been something i need to study up on that oddly enough i have been putting off. i put a system togethere yesterday that has the new 9800xt in it, and since the customer preferred to set up windows himself, i didn't get to mess with any of the video cards setiings. he is now asking for my help- he is getting very low scores compared to others with the same or similar hardware setup. what could be causing this?
    thanks in advance...

Did he install the latest Catalyst drivers for it?

And what scores is he getting? Many people will overclock their core and memory speeds on their cards, thus giving them a performance increase...so he might not be getting as low as he thinks he is...

he has a p4 3.2 ghz. i sent him the link for the catalyst drivers on the ati site, because it was an oem card. he says he has the latest directx 9 updates. the test was done with the latest 3d mark 03.
his score was 3,000 and he says the scores he is comparing his to are 8,000 or 10,000

Has he installed all the latest motherboard(Chipset/IDE) drivers for his mobo?

Also, are the BIOS settings 'optimised' or the 'defualt' For example DMA is enabled and the RAM timing is setup for best speeds.

You want the DMA set as high as possibly. 5 is 100MBs(ATA 100), 6 is 133MBs(ATA133). Of course you need the 80 wire IDE cable to get those speeds.

Of course that has no impact on Memory read - there's different settings that can be adjusted fot that in the BIOS>

    Then no DMA.

Tell him to try 3D mark 2001 and compare those scores.
