Automatic chatline dialers???

My niece has dial up through a phone company and for two months in a row has been billed for 'dialing' into an adult chat site that neither she nor her husband have dialed into. These bills are for well over $100 (Canadian - but still...*L*)
She has asked me for help and as much as I would like to think I'm a smart@$$ with computers, I'm stumped with how to fix the problem for her.
The phone company has taken the numbers off her bill (all 900 numbers) once, but has said if they reappear, she will have to pay for them unless she can submit proof that they are not making these calls willingly.
PLEASE HELP!!
If an email could be sent to kewtchic@hotmail.com when a reply is posted, that would be great. Unfortunately for me, I no longer have an internet connection at my home, but can check when I'm at my niece's... THANKS BUNCHES!!!

Do this:

Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds.

That ought to get rid of most of your spyware.

When you've done all that, go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Reboot in between running spybot & Hijackthis

I would say for starters to do the HJT as the previous user noted and in between not using the computer, disconnect the phone cord from the wall =) I dont really think the computer is dialing on its own but.. I guess we will see.

Then call your phone company and have them cancel all 900 numbers from access. Period!

They cannot bill you if you dispute it at least what I know from some state laws.

They must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the calls came from your residence! There has been issues in the past with problems around this situation.

Also ask the phone company what they feel you should do. Then the blame can lay upon them when they bill you for 900 numbers that are not suppose to be accessed from your line in the first place =/ =)

GL!

Wow ! ! !

Its very gratifying your took the time to respond and even more so your problem was resolved. Hopefully your phone company took some leinency with you and your bill and simply terminated any funds heading to these numbers.

If the Internet was this easy still today :)

GL to You and Happy Holidays!
