I'm looking for an ultraportable laptop that can survive jolts on a bus or train, with a battery life > 6 hrs. Naturally then, the laptop must have LED backlighting, a C2D ULV processor and most importantly - a solid state disk. I saw a Thinkpad X61s with a SSD about a month ago, but it was slightly over my $2000 CAD budget limit (and Lenovo's Canadian prices are still obscene, compared to the U.S). Now I don't see it anymore. The same holds true for a Dell Latitude D430 - they pulled it from their offerings.

Since it is so difficult to find a laptop with an SSD built in, I'm wondering if I could completely disable the internal HDD (remove it if necessary!) and use an external flash boot disk. Has anybody actually managed to do this? I know it's possible to boot Linux and Windows XP from a flash disk, but I'm not sure about Vista.

Another avenue is buying a laptop with an ExpressCard slot, but this is financially unfeasible in my case (the immensely seductive Macbook Pro is way out of my budget!).
