I was looking at these freeware AntiVirus program's to replace InoculateIt. The Company is ending InoculateIt support in May.
    :
    "Avast!" (ALWIL Software); "AVG" (Grisoft)
    :
Both seem to get pretty good ratings, and I was thinking of getting one of them, then getting Norton AntiVirus when I have the extra $$$ available.
    :
Any opinion's as to their ability to stop unwanted stuff from getting in, ease of setup & use would be appreciated.
One thing I've noticed is AVG only issues updates monthly--and I think Avast! is the same--is this often enough to effectively defend against new virii?
    :
Will be using whichever one I get with ZoneAlarm (Freeware) Version 2.6.231

    Gary,

I realize that you are looking for opinions as to personal experience with the use of A/V programs.

I don't have any on board A/V protection as of this time, I will probably have to have a bigger scare of having some virus get in here and completely take out the OS before I get some A/V in here.
I just got rid of some bug that got in here somehow, and I say "somehow".... because I just do not open attachments, but still one did get in here and with some help from Rog, Mosaic, and Mac from OK..... some patience and time I was finally able to get it out.
Thing is even though it's all out of here it left it's mark fairly deep and I'm not out of the woods just yet. I'd love to know just how and when it got in here, but the thing is "that it got in".......

Tony Klein posted a link to a side by side comparison of all available A/V software available free ones and not free ones. I wish I could find the thread and get that link or perhaps get him to post it once again.

At any rate I know that any A/V program is only as good as how often the ref. files/virus definitions are updated, the more often they are updated the better.

you might look at these guys I believe they have a free one and they update weekly.

I'll be sure to check back in here often as I also would like additional info and others here are likely to help out with more than I can.

I use Trend Pc-Cillin for anti-virus and they send updates automatically. However, I recently downloaded AVG but only enabled the email bit as PC-Cillin has a compatibility problem with my ISP and POP3 scan, which I have to disable. It still catches viruses in emails, though, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to have another check.

Then yesterday I got a pornographic email directing me to a porn site and at the bottom of the email was the Grisoft web address. This is how they got my email address, obviously. As they already had my address, I thought it wouldn't hurt to send them an email telling them not to send me any more rubbish.

I have not had a real problem with SPAM as yet and was surprised that this came from a site which supplies a virus programme.

Correction: the last link turns out to be quite an old one, so let's view it with some reserve.

I'll see what else I can dig up.

It sends me a E-mail for every update, I have had it catch 2 virus's to date, and none have gotten through.

As I use a dial - up I am quite carefull as to what is running on my system.

In addition to avg, I use addaware, webwasher, and mailwasher, my system seems to be running well and I have NO problems with win 98 SE crashing.

    System Specs:
Compaq7885 (all trash from Compaq removed)
    700mhz P3
    256 megs of ram
    40 gig Maxtor H/D
    Intell chipset graffics
US robotics external Modem (replaces pac-tell winmodem)
    Compaq DVD and cd/rw

I know lots of people HATE Compaqs, but this one is 2 yrs old and running GREAT !!...I think it is verry important to limit startup programs and maintain a regular regiment of sceduled task..I/E ..scandisc...defrag....etc..

Anyway, I recomend AVG, it is easy to use, has a small footprint and scans both ingoing and outgoing E-Mail...all for free, hard to beat !...Rhett
