I could not removed AVG and eventually found how to do it while killing a virus.
    I hope this helps.
AVG is protected by a little.exe program that stops uninstal.
    Click the windows icon,bottom left.
In the run tool, where the magnifying glass is type taskmgr
    Click the processes tab.
Go down the list until you find vprot.exe, click on it.
    Click stop process.

You just took away The program protecting AVG.
I then disinstalled AVG by hand.

    Click the windows icon.
    Computer.
    Double click C drive.
    Double click Program files.
Single click AVG, then pick remove and its done.
just take off the remaining icon from your browser toolbar.
And maybe cleanup the startup entries with AML. And its as good as new.

AVG is normally removed easily with the AVG Remover. You should never attempt to remove software manually. You'll never find everything.

No the free version of AVG will not simply uninstall. It simply will not go away. If you google AVG uninstall you will see dozens of other people with the same problem. That is why I took the time to talk about it.

The AVG Remover tool removes ALL traces of AVG, including associated files, services, registry entries - everytime.
The tool is designed by AVG specifically for the job. No reason to use any other method. It works a treat.
