I am wondering if AVG is a good anti-virus for me. I currenty have McCrappy (an older version, too) and desperately need a new AV. I would like to try out one before buying and AVG seems to have a good rep and also a free version that I could try. I am open to suggestions other than AVG if anyone is willing to put in their 2 cents on the subject.

Avg works well for me, It is especially useful on low spec systems as you have, because it normally takes up little overheads unlike several of the more bloated commercial offerings

The free version is slow to update at times but seems to protect well if used with a modicum of comon sense

    ***stupid question alert***
Should I use it in conjunction with my McCrappee or alone? Someone told my wife that they use it with theirs. Is that smart or needless (or dangerous!)??

You should only ever run one antivirus at a time, otherwise there is the possibility of them fighting over a virus and neither stopping it

I use Avg on two systems and Norton on two others. Of the two Avg the smaller system uses the free version and the other larger system has the pro version and both have been very reliable thus far..

Thanks guys. I'll probably go ahead and try it. Any other good ideas about freebie AV's? I know there are a few out there, but I also have heard some rumbling about a lot being very pourous.

You will have to submit an authentic email to avg so as to get the key mailed to use the antivirus as well..
