    Hello,

The computer seems to be taking a while to boot of late
I tried to fix it up a bit last night:
Looked for malware, uninstalled a load of stuff, optimized startup in msconfig, cleaned the registry.
BUT, it's still taking a while (longer than it used to)

    any ideas?

    Thanks,

    How much longer?

And where does the added delay seem to occur -- before the Windows welcome screen, at it, or once the desktop appears?

Bootvis can sometimes be used to pinpoint delays and the "optimize" feature, even though it is built in to Windows -- does sometimes help.

    Examples of its use here:

You should post a Hijackthis scanlog as well:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

Hi Rog, thanks for the reply.

The delay seems to be after the logon screen.

    Here's a HJT log

That is usually the point at which networking configurations are established -- and it appears you have a lot going on there. I can't really pinpoint the problem for you.

You also have all those "widgets" and one or more of those may be causing a delay.

To remove the ipodservice, open a command prompt (start > run: cmd and enter:

    sc delete iPodService

It should be gone on reboot.

You may need to use "clean boot" troubleshooting techniques to isolate the delay.

This is the general drill for doing that:

First, restart in Safe Mode (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu).

In Safe Mode, run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

    hi again Rog,

thanks.. will do. i think it's the lantool
    "O23 - Service: LanTool - N37dev - C:\Program Files\LanTool\LanTool.exe"
so i'll disable that and see.

i don't think it's the widgets, they've been on since before the problems..

    thanks again :D

You're welcome -- if you identify the problem, let us know -- and you can mark the thread "Solved" using the Thread Tools menu.

If I can answer any further questions for you, I will -- but this is often the kind of thing that takes trial and error startup configurations to resolve.
