I was considering buying dedicated software for backing up my hard drive when I checked the Nero software that is installed on my machine and noticed that it has a back up function (I think it is NERO6)

My questions are firstly is this adequate for backing up my entire hard drive (40GB) to an external drive? Or do I need specialist software for this. If so which is recommended bearing in mind that it needs to be user friendly.

I have attempted to experiment with NERO to create a back up but am worried that I might be doing something wrong. At the initial user interface I clicked Create New Drive Backup

I then got a window stating Select partitions or complete hard disc for back up there were then three headings the first of which was Drive Name: Disc 0 37.28GB the second was Local Disc C: 37.26 GB NTFS/HPFS and the third was Primary free - 15.69mb unallocated

Total size: 37.28GB ----Used 36.26GB a message then stated that A file system may be currently in use I should state that the second box with Local Disc C: was shaded red.

I then clicked on 'Disc 0' and 'Local Disc C:' in turn and got the message: You are trying to back up a partition which is currently in use - the content of the partition may change between backup and verification and the verification may fail - if you want to continue with the verification click OK

Am I able to back up my hard drive using this application? If so what am I doing wrong. If I am able to back up will it contain everything on my PC (ie all the files, folders and applications)

I hope someone is able to help as I have read so many scare stories where people have lost information through lack of back up and I don't want to be another!

I think I'd trust something like Acronis True Image way before I'd try to do this with Nero. Nero really isn't suited to backup your boot partition.
