Ok, i searched throughout this forum and tried to remove the system32.exe myself. NAV kept saying it couldn't repair, quarantine, or delete it because access was denied so i deleted it myself. Now I get these messages popping up saying it can't find the file. Was that file important? I also get a lot of errors with explorer. It's unable to load certain websites like my.yahoo and aborts and also gets errors searching through folders. I used spybot, but that didn't help.

here is log from hijack this...please help computer guru's

Run hijackthis again and put a checkmark against these entries....double check
    in case you miss anything....
.....then,close all browser and outlook windows and "fix checked"

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe

This next one,is it something you know? if not "fix" it.

Then reboot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at start up,and using windows explorer... navigate to and delete the following file.
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe

make sure it is the System32.exe file only and not the system32 folder
then reboot normally & run an online virus scan at one of the following sites
    http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

hi this is my first post and this thread was most relevant, i'm in the same position. I have backdoor.sdbot trojan and used norton to scan and it didn't find it, AVG did. I followed the steps on nortons site but did no good at all. Computer kept restarting at random untill i took out my broadband cable which allowed me to install norton internet security. This is now blocking all attempts the virus is made and my computer is stable but 'SVCHOST' and the 'SYSTEM32.EXE' are still in the windows/system32 folder and present in task manager. I ran Hijack this as sujjested in the previous posts. REsults:

Wow, finally managed to delete system32.exe. Thanks :) Is svchost a virus though? Its also in the system32 folder and on the norton site it said the virus ca take many names including ....(gives a list of many) including svchost.exe. Hijack this didn't find it so is it not a virus? Also norton internet security asks me which programs i should allow and block. so far i have been blocking it just in case

    thanks again :)

    svchost - svchost.exe - Process Information
    Process File: svchost or svchost.exe
    Process Name: Service Host Process
Description: The Service Host Process is generic host process for services that are run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs)

Meaning...its a legit part of windows but can be used by the "dark" side of things....donyt worry about it there is usually more than one running at a time.
your log should now be clean.
A general rule of thumb concerning firewall access is....if in doubt DENY.If the program requesting access is know to you like MSN Messenger then its ok and also to grant server rights.....not many programs need server rights apart from on-line games
If you deny and then something dos`nt work then you know to grant permission to it the next time.

    ;)
