I have no confidence in the backups on this device, and the manual is so terse as to be useless.
Can this USB 160Gig external device be wiped of its internal automatic process, and just used as a 2nd harddrive, and a standard backup program to access it?
Or, conversely, can anyone provide me with good instructions for using it as is?

I would never use the pathetic backup applications that come with USB drives. I've never used that drive, but AFAIK, it's a standard USB 2.0 disk, no reason that I can think of you can't just lose the Iomega software and use it like a standard disk.
