I'm using a Linksys WRK54G, and I have 2 computers sharing a DSL connection. The laptop is connected wirelessly while my old desktop is hard-wired to the router. I've been using this setup for almost a year and have never had any problems...until 2 days ago. The LAN connection on the desktop "turns on and off" constantly or stays "off." I don't mean it's disabling and enabling itself, I just keep getting the big red X in the system tray, either solid or intermittently.

I have tried all I know to do, from rebooting to power-cycling the router and modem (independently and simultaneously) and even trying to hook the cable into the other 3 hard wire jacks in the router. Nothing seems to work. Last night this worked for, oh, and hour, and it did it again. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

can you connect your laptop up with the cable and see if it works OK - if the laptop does works OK then its a PC fault and could be spyware or virus on the PC.

the nic card or pci slot may be failing/failed, try the card in another slot.

Is there anything I can do besides getting a new router? It connects to the net fine when bypassing the router (PC to modem), but I really don't want to buy a new NIC for this clunky old desktop. The firmware is up-to-date, btw.

    Thanks.

no if you have to have a router.

nothing wrong with the nic card if you can connect directly to the modem.

Yes, I did try that, and the laptop wouldn't work. Obviously the LAN ports on the router are jacked up...I was wondering if there's something I can do on the router to make those ports work again. After all, the wireless works just fine.

And if I do decide to invest in a new router, is wireless-N really worth the extra cost?

I dont think they have finalised the standard yet - so you may be best advised to wait

can you post an IPCONFIG /ALL -see later

if the laptop does not work - it could be a faulty cable or router

Have you tried a different cable

have you tried all the LAN ports on the router?
Make a note of anysettings you have modified in the router and then try resetting the router to factory default, reimput any settings.

    ipconfig /all

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

    ONE ---------------------------------
    start
    run
    cmd
    ipconfig /all

    rightclick in the box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

    TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

    IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.
