:eek:I have a basic security questions here.

1 Can a virus or worm damage the network card, router or modem?

2 Can a hacker damage the network card, router or modem?

3.Can current go on the internet cable and damage the network card, router or modem? Like a power out or lighting strike.

And the last can a capacitor explode or burn out and damage the network card, router or modem?

I know there is malware that can effect the BIOS firmware..

    1) I don't know but possible I would think
    2) Not intentionally. I think you mean Cracker, then yes probably, depending on what you mean by damage. Would basically be same as 1 (Media has done an excellent job at confusing the two Hacker/Cracker)
    3) Most definitely.

I think a PC that's alive is more valuable than dead, and a cracker would rather capture it alive, install keyloggers and dig around your files. There is a possibility that the mission is to sabotage, but I think that's rare. After all, a network card only costs $10. If sabotage is intended, he could erase all your files, that could cause more irreplacable damage.

Malware can delete files, install programs, slow your system down, and add dancing Smurfs to your desktop, but they can't physically break you hardware. Worse comes to worse, you can reinstall Windows and you'll be fine. :)
