To start with VB, I used Learn Visual Basic 6 in 21 days, then later used More Visual Basic 6 in 21 days. After I finished with both these, I used some How To books which were specifically for a particular topic like Database How To and one General VB 6 How To.

I think by the time you are thru with these books, you won't need any further books and MSDN would suffice.

Learning thru net and sites is okay, but books are better. If you are new to programming, I would suggest start with VB and leave C++ for some other day. Learn to swim in a swimming pool and then go for the ocean :)
