Best "free" virus protection

Is there a good "free" virus protection program that covers as many Win operating systems as possible? Im teaching a basic computer internet class in my church and would like to give folks who can't afford to purchase a virusprogram, a copy of something free to protect their computers. It needs to be easy to use. Most of these folks have very little computer knowledge.

i use AVG 7 free ,it does a nice job.

Agreed. I run AVG at home on two PCs and have yet to have any complaints with it.
