We have an arrangement with our clients whereby they get bigger ads if they link to our site. (For SEO reasons).

I've seen others use iframes and images and text and and etc,

What's the best method - Is it iframes or another way?
    Please give me an example.

Also is there a clever method of checking that they have in fact posted the link?

You can check where a person has come from by using the referrer variable using a server-side language like PHP, or you could get each site to post a unique link e.g. www.example.com/index.php?referrerid=3. Then your PHP script can handle the variable and add to a counter (probably in a database).
