I want to set up a central storage location for my home's digital media (videos, music, etc) so that it can be shared with all my devices (PS3, tv, computers, etc) and I was wondering what is the BEST way to go about this. I've looked into different setups and here are the options I have found and their pros and cons:

Option A): A wireless n router with a USB port that would allow for an external hard drive to be connected. Pros: cheaper than a NAS device....Cons: some say (including CNET) that external hard drives don't do well at streaming HD videos through a router

Option B): a wireless n router with a NAS device attached. Pros: proven to stream HD videos better (according to CNET)....Cons: costs more than option A (cheapest NAS disk-less device is about $150)

Are there other options I have not found or considered? Do the pros and cons I have found sound accurate? Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated!

    First Name:
I have this setup - using a linksys router WAG320N and stream wirelessly to my TV via a Humax PVR and also Via a Panasonic TV both internet connected via a wireless repeater - stream music OK, and i have streamed a couple of videos - BUT not extensive , as I had my Humax PVR and stream HD via iplayer over the net all OK - also trailed Sky on humax and that also worked very well

However, I will be adding a NAS server later as i want to be able to add more than 1 drive and have more contol of the media server - Probably a Qnap device , I'm quite disappointed with the way the media server works - as the music is listed alphabetically , so an album is shown with the titles in alphabetic order , I also want to be able to manage the server from a remote device
Also Raid can be used , so there is some redundancy and less risk of losing everything if the drive goes down, which it will do eventually

But the Router option is OK for the moment and a lot cheaper as you say ..

How do intend to connect the music to the Hifi, I use the Humax/TV onto a hifi amp at the moment
what will the main use be ?
And what kit do you intend to connect to ?
