I have a 3.0ghz, 1gb ram, winxp pro. It had been running just fine and started just average speed. But lately when I enter in the username password, it takes 3-4 minutes to load everything.
The regular programs that load at startup are Zone Alarm, Windows Messengers, NOD32, AVG Anti-Spyware, Sound...
What is the best way to speed up the startup process?
You can edit boot.ini (directly or using msconfig) to display the list of operating systems to boot 0 seconds instead of the default 30 seconds.
If you have mapped network drives or connections to shares that that are no longer available, that will increase startup time. Delete the mapped drive connections.
If you have instant messenger accounts that load at logon, they will slow startup especially if the server no longer recognizes your username and/or password.

If you don't know chances are this doesn't apply to you. Anyway, a mapped drive would be (for example) a "G:" drive, which shows up in MyComputer, that is or was mapped to another computer on a network. If that computer is not turned on or is no longer available, your computer will take a long time trying to connect to it before giving up.
canndy, as suggested, limiting programs on startup will decrease your boot times. If you want to try a free program that many here use to speed up boot times as well as many other tweaks, try TuneXP 1.5.
