This is what I suggest you do first.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot and Ad-aware. All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

    Spybot:
Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

    Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:
Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

    Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

    Restart your computer.

    Post a new HijackThis log.

    I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    Restart in Safe Mode:
    Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these files if still there.

    REAIPLAY.EXE <--Delete File
    c:\windows\system32\lspak.dll <---Delete File

If these temp folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin

    Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on and create a restore point.

    To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

okay. so apparently i fixed 6 out of the ones you listed. for the "unknown files" this message came up::
"hijackthis cannot repair O10 Winsock LSP entries.
you should use lspfix for that, which is available from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm.

if the O10 item belongs to WebHancer, New.Net or CommonName, Spybot S&D can remove it automatically..."
and i did use spybot again but that didn't work, so i just continued on w/ your guide to the end and by the time i scanned w/ hijackthis the two reaiplay.exe files were back in the list.

    here's my recent log::

you should use lspfix for that, which is available from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm.

    Go ahead and run it.

Also remove this: C:\WINDOWS\System32\REAIPLAY.EXE <---Delete File

    Restart to safe mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now find and delete this folder:

    C:\Program Files\SED folder.

    Delete this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\REAIPLAY.EXEREAIPLAY.EXE

Launch the application, and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.

Check all instances of lspak.dll and calsp.dll (and nothing else) , and move them to the "Remove" pane.
    Then click Finish.

Now start your computer in Safe Mode and delete these files:

    C:\windows\system32\lspak.dll
    C:\windows\system32\calsp.dll

Click Here and download the VX2Finder.exe tool. Click on the VX2Finder.exe and then click on the Click to Find VX2.Betterinternet button. It will display the files, the Guardian Key and User Agent string. Now click the Make Log button. It will open the log in notepad. Copy and paste that log here and wait for further instructions.

Run VX2Finder again and click on the Find VX2.Betterinternet button. It will display the entries as before. Click on the User Agent button and it will delete the user agent string.

    Restart your computer.

After that you should be good to go! (y)

flrman1, When you check this thread, could you make a note in a reply about this:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\cvss.exe

If this is still in the final log, should it be removed...

4_letter::: I'm asking, not saying to fix it , as I was advised that it is always bad and should be fixed...(not by flrman1) Perhaps, it is the one that the User Agent string is related to, and will be fixed?

Thanks Bill, I completely overlooked that one!

Please restart your computer, scan again with Hijack This and post a fresh log. That file definately needs to be deleted.

Now find and delete this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\cvss.exe

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin

    Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
    Restart your computer.

When you are sure you are clean turn it back on and create a restore point.

Go here and do an online virus scan.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the exact file name and file location so you can delete it yourself.
