We suddenly have no sound at all on this PC. In device manager multimedia audio controller has a yellow question mark against it. It says no drivers installed (code 28) Tried reinstalling them but says cannot find.
I do not know how to find what driver we need. I assume that this is the reason we have no sound.
Have been on Dells website and put in the service tag number but in all honesty I don't have a clue what I am looking for

I really do not know how to proceed am not very computer literate. Can anybody help please.

    would you do this please
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to identify hardware in Device Manager

right click on the device with a yellow!

    from the menu choose
    properties
    Click on the Details Tab
Under the Property - drop down
    Select hardware ids
    Right click and select all
Then right click again and select copy
Copy and paste that information here

You should see a code similar to this

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53058086&REV_34

please reply with the full code for your device(s)

The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53058086&REV_34

    Vendor ID = 8086
    Device ID = 008A

Post back those two numbers make sure we know which is vendor ID and which is device ID

These codes can be looked up at this site http://www.pcidatabase.com/

    As an example the link for that database tells us that;
Vendor ID code 8086 is for this vendor - Intel Corporation
Device ID code 008A is for this device - Intel Centrino Wireless-N1030

Thank you so much for replying but now I have a further problem. I read on one forum to uninstall the multimedia audio controller and then restart PC and it should reinstall with the drivers. It was listed in device manager in 'others'. Now in device manager there is no 'others' and no multimedia device controller, so I cannot do what you asked of me. Thats the trouble with messing around with things that you no practically nothing about. Any ideas where I go from here, is it possible to reinstall the multimedia audio controller. I do have the original XP installation discs provided by Dell.
