Problem with a black screen, I updated my windows 10, update started OK, had a screen saying `do not turn off computer` 4 hours later black screen =, tried rebooting black screen every time after the post, tried all ways to repair or restore, so got a new SSD to do a full clean install, gets right to the end of the install, try to use it, then black screen, reinstall several times and always the same, I am wondering if this is a hardware problem?

If you insert a boot drive (Macrium, Windows installer) does boot continue?
Is there any hard drive activity when there’s a black screen?
If an external monitor has the screen entered sleep mode?
Is there any USB external hard drive connected during restart?

No, once it got to the black screen, it stayed there for an hour or more.

    Which didn’t work?
Can you provide an answer as to hard drive activity, if you’re using an external monitor & whether any boot drive works.
I can’t work out which question the ‘no’ is referring to.

Second one `when it got as far as the black screen`, that was it, nothing more, no activity , no sleeping monitors

What happened when you tried inserting a boot USB?
When I have this on the odd occasion this works for me & boot continues.
If it doesn’t work then you may have to boot from the USB & choose to repair the startup under troubleshooting.

I was using a repair/restore USB, it was only when I just had the mouse/keyboard and internet cable connected that it fully installed, working OK ever since. I can only presume that had something to do with it.

Removing any USB external hard drive/boot drive can also fix the problem, especially after an update.
