Download and run CWShredder here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

Close all browser windows, open cwshredder then click "Fix" and let it run.

IMPORTANT! To help prevent this from happening again, you should install all the security patches and critical updates.

Then download the latest version of HijackThis, v1.97.7 and create its own folder for it (I see yours is in TEMP files and it should not be there) and post a new log after rebooting.

O.K. I'm surprised that CWShredder didn't fix the about:blank items. It might be a good idea to run it again and be sure to choose fix, not just scan.

I recognize a couple of nasties in the log so there are a couple more steps that we can take that might clear those out.

Download the following programs and run them.

AD-AWARE

Go here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
and download Ad-Aware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right-hand corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window: Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

I hate to tell you this, but now you've got HiJack This on your desktop which is not good. Please move it to it's own folder, say in program files or accessories. It's important so that it can create back-ups there.

When you're all done, reboot and post another log please.

Ok, before you do anything else, please move HiJack This to it's own folder. The reason is that it creates both log files and back-up files. I don't think you want those all over your desktop.

Give me a few minutes to go thru your log.

In Hijack This, check ALL of the following items. Double check so as to be sure not to miss a single one.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HT fix all checked.

O1 - Hosts: )", Timeout);
O1 - Hosts: }
O1 - Hosts: }
O1 - Hosts: else {
O1 - Hosts: cript').src = "";
O1 - Hosts: }
O1 - Hosts: , '" + Repeat + "')", Timeout);

O1 - Hosts: }

O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 search.netscape.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [precpop2] "C:\Program Files\Precpop2\starter.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SQInstaller] C:\IGETNET_3845_3645.EXESQInstaller.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PGStub.exe] C:\DP-B23011805.EXE

O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

Next reboot into Safe Mode and remove the following files and folders that are bolded

C:\Program Files\Precpop2\starter.exe Delete whole folder

C:\IGETNET_3845_3645.EXESQInstaller.exe
C:\DP-B23011805.EXE

See here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406 for how to start in safe mode if you don't know how.

Reboot into normal mode

Use NotePad to open \Windows\hosts (note there is NO extension on this file) and look for

O1 - Hosts: )", Timeout);
O1 - Hosts: }
O1 - Hosts: }
O1 - Hosts: else {
O1 - Hosts: cript').src = "";
O1 - Hosts: }
O1 - Hosts: , '" + Repeat + "')", Timeout);

O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 ieautosearch

IF there, delete those entries, save and exit NotePad.

Now download Spybot - Search & Destroy (if you haven't got the program installed already)

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED

Reboot

Last, run HJT again and post your log again to see if anything was missed.

Thanks

Sometimes these apparently "empty" folders are the result of the "divider" bars not being set properly. See if you can drag them about. Also let us know if it makes any difference what "view" type you select, such as "list" or "details", etc.

There was an article I have now lost track of that might be relevant. I believe the instructions were to left click the "empty" folder, then press the ctrl key and the plus key (on the number pad), tapping it several times. This is supposed to reset the dividers.

I would also suggest running the IE Repair tool, since the display problem may be related to common entries.

Run the CoolWebShredder again. Then reboot in Safe Mode ( http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406 )

In Safe Mode run Hijack This and check the following entries, then click "fix Checked".

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.searchwww.com/bar.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ejpwu] C:\WINDOWS\xoiulrvt.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoUpdater] "c:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe"

>> Find and delete the bolded files or folders above.

The "about:blank" hijack can be difficult to resolve. If it returns you need to do a file search of the Windows\system directory, using the Advanced method to locate all files which have been "modified" on the date it returned. You want to let us know what ".dlls" are found to be modified on this date.

You should also verify that you have installed the "Byte Verifier" patches/updates from MS:

ByteVerifier:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/ms03-011.asp

The scanlog still shows problems, and you may be getting reinfected. To stop this you will need to re-examine your browsing and downloading habits and ensure you have all MS critical updates.

Make a notepad copy of these instructions or print them out. Then reboot in Safe Mode. To do this you press and hold the ctrl key on startup and select Safe Mode from the startup menu when it appears.

>> In Safe Mode, run HijackThis and check the following entries, then click "fix checked":

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {63B78BC1-A711-4D46-AD2F-C581AC420D41} - C:\PROGRAM Files\COMMON FILES\WINTOOLS\BTIEIN.DLL

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stcloader] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\stcloader.exe

>> Before rebooting delete the WINTOOLS folder in the path above and delete the file stcloader.exe in c:\windows\system.

You should also install, UPDATE, and run a full system scan using Spybot, Ad-Aware or both:

Spybot Instructions and Download
Ad-Aware Home Page and Ad-Aware 6: Reference Guide by Winchester73

If you have not installed the last IE Cumulative patch, you should do so, but make sure you install this help files update first:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=832894
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-013.mspx

Keep posting those Scanlogs if the problem persists.

And here's a good link to review to help prevent reinfections:
