I'm having the same problem after trying to load easycd creator 5 platinum.
I went to the website and downloaded and ran startup.log
    From here on I'm lost!
Can anyone help me? (i'm nearly Computer iliterate!)

    REM Notes:
REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows. It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS. The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in the
REM \Image directory of your reference server. Please note that for
REM MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys. This driver won't be used by Windows 98
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 98 exits.
    REM
REM This file is also helpful if you want to F8 boot into MS-DOS 7.0
REM before Windows loads and access the CD-ROM. All you have to do
REM is press F8 and then run DOSSTART to load MSCDEX and your real
REM mode mouse driver (no need to remember the command line parameters
    REM for these two files.
    REM
REM - You MUST explicitly specify the CD ROM Drive Letter for MSCDEX.
REM - The string following the /D: statement must explicitly match
REM the string in CONFIG.SYS following your CD-ROM device driver.

    REM MSCDEX.EXE /D:OEMCD001 /l:d

Go to start and run msconfig. Click on the "startup" tab and remove the checks for the following adaptec related entries:

    1-- "Adaptec DirectCD"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\ADAPTEC\\DIRECTCD\\DIRECTCD.EXE"

    2-- AdaptecDirectCD"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Adaptec\\Easy CD Creator 5\\DirectCD\\DirectCD.exe\""

    3-- CreateCD50"=" C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\ADAPTE~1\\CREATECD\\CREATE

Also remove the check for this item:

    4-- webHancer Agent"="\"C:\\Program Files\\webHancer\\Programs\\whAgent.exe\""

After restarting, go to Add/Remove programs and remove webhancer (this is something that came bundled in an install and alters the way windows accesses the interenet. It also is considered "spyware".

    After removing webhancer, restart.

If you don't get any adaptec errors, go back to msconfig > startup and recheck, one at a time, the adaptec entries and restart after each to see if you can find which one is causing the error. You may be able to do without it. Or you may just have to uninstall adaptec and find something else.

Other than uninstalling Adaptec, not really. Perhaps someone else will.

However I do see on strange anomally in your startup, under #7 win.ini

    run=hpfsched,C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\VTAgentReboot.exe
    OldRun=hpfsched

hpfsched is just a reminder to register the hp printer. It can and should be removed.

This is the real strange one though:

    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\VTAgentReboot.exe

Nothing belongs there loading from c:\windows\temp.

It looks like it was meant to be removed after an install, but wasn't.

So, do this: from start, run win.ini (it will open in Notepad) and edit the run= line so it reads only:

    run=

with nothing after it. Close the file and save the changes when prompted.

by the way, Casper's a very friendly ghost, why not drop him a PM and see what he did to resolve the problem.

I have only one thig to add. If you unchecked all references to Adaptec in Msconfig have you gone back in to see if they remained unchecked?
You have Winme and may have a Shutdown issue. On the off chance, please have another look at your Msconfig
The driver referenced is the packet writing driver. I don't know what else would be calling it other than Direct CD.

I went back and reread your post .

Were you unable to finish the installation? If so, you should try it again and then perform an uninstall.
Are you using any other burning software? Nero? Sony? Or even another version of Adaptec?

I tried uninstall of easy cd 4 and 5. still getting blue screen.
I'm really confused. when I tried uninstall through start, control panel, add/remove it went to install which I cancelled. Then when I click on the easy cd creator in the start, programs list it starts and appears like the whole program is there. What is going on? I have obviously missed something pretty important.

I think I would go ahead and recheck the items in msconfig since unchecking them didn't make any difference. Then try add/remove again. If it want's to install, I'd let it and see what happens. That may correct the problem or at least allow you to uninstall afterwards.
